The results are in. The International Telecommunication Union took the trouble to find the country that has the best internet connection. The result of this survey was announced to the world in a report; turns out that the country that has the best internet connection in the world wasn’t something that was expected. In fact, the result may have come as a surprise to many! Because it is that country in which the Internet is the most regulated. Yes South Korea, we are looking at you!

An Advanced Broadband Infrastructure and Thriving Startup Ecosystem Makes South Korea the Best Place to Open a Virtual Shop

The report conducted by the International Telecommunication Union named South Korea as the county having the fasted internet connection – and with good reason. The country now leads the ICT Development Index table, with the likes of U.S., Japan and the UK trailing far, far behind.

This comes at a surprise, especially after witnessing the ill-treatment of Google which is known to easily dominate any market the popular search engine enters.

And The Best Internet Connection Stands At?

To get a near accurate reading, the IDI ratings were carried out on the speed of the internet i.e. bandwidth that’s measured in bits per second, percentage of households that have a computer and the volume of fixed subscriptions per 100 people. Each country was given a score out of 10, the highest being 8.93 scored by South Korea.

The Scandinavian country, Denmark came in second on the list after leading the top of the table for many years while the UK had the fourth best IDI score (surprisingly), higher than Japan and U.S., both.

Was Pitting Third World Countries Against Developed Ones A Fair Idea?

The list also featured the likes of Cuba, Afghanistan and Ethiopia, which is why many IT experts questioned the report of showing a bias result. Lack of a developed broadband infrastructure didn’t however result in either of these countries to get the title of ‘Worst Internet Connection in The World’, a title that went to Chad with a measly IDI rating of 1.17.

It seems internet connections have very little to do with developed or undeveloped as Albania was found to have the worst internet connection in Europe with a dwindling score of only 4.73. So, what does South Korea has that no other country does?

A Fast Developing Technology Industry behind South Korea’s Crazy Internet Speed

Along with the fervent e-sports culture the country has developed over the years, the increase in internet speed is also dependent upon the number of people that visit ‘PC bangs’ or cafes where young groups of people go and play video games or to browse the internet.

Disappointed that your country didn’t make it to the top? You can have the same speed internet. While your internet service provider can and wants to sell only the fastest internet connection there’s, ask yourself this: ‘do you really need that extra speed?’ Chances are you won’t. But it sure has it appeal, right?
